job and apprenticeship opportunities

Earth Sky Time is a creative community of farmers, bakers, artists, musicians and friends. We grow 6 acres of organic vegetables, bake a ton of bread and cook up loads of awesome food, but we also strive to create art and enjoy the beauty of our surroundings! We offer farming, baking and kitchen jobs and internships, which provide hands-on training and meaningful responsibilities along with the use of professional art and music facilities, and a supportive funky community. Management positions are also available for qualified candidates.

We welcome creative hard working folks to come steward the land, share skills, feed our neighbors and have fun with us! We attempt to match folks’ responsibilities with their interests, and we often create hybrid positions, combining aspects of the following jobs. We also welcome the crew to take advantage of our ceramic, woodworking, metalworking, and music studios.

FARM CREW - grows the food: We raise veggies, herbs, flowers and fruit, plus a ¼ acre of high tunnel greenhouses (tomatoes in the summer and cold hardy greens all winter long). As a year round farm, we’ve got a lot to do, from greenhouse soilblocking and seeding to transplanting, cultivating, mulching, scouting, pruning, harvesting, cover cropping and maintaining greenhouses and equipment. The farm crew also keeps the farm store stocked with produce and coordinates harvests for the kitchen and farmers markets. Folks with extensive farm experience should reach out about leadership opportunities.

KITCHEN MAGICIANS - cook it up: Our main products include: VT Goldburgers (carrot-curry veggie burgers), Hoomoos Zaatar (hummus) and garlic scape pesto. Much of our kitchen work is focused on preserving the farm's produce through freezing and lactic ferments like kraut, pickles and kim chi. The farm kitchen creates vegetarian farm-to-table feasts for crew lunches, our farm store, and events, and crafts wood-fired pizza on our one of a kind double decker bread bus for our raucous concerts.

BAKERS - turn it into bread: Bakers are trained to maintain starter cultures, mix, fold and shape our production of around 2000 loaves each week (plus croissants). Our process relies on extremely slow fermentation, which allows our bread to develop beautiful structure, flavor and keeping quality and lets our bakers get some sleep. Bakers go through mixing and shaping rotations and have opportunities to develop oven skills on our 40,000 lb rotating hearth Llopis oven.

FARMERS MARKETERS - bring the food to the people: We attend 7 weekly farmers markets (mostly starting in May, though a few go year round). Good organizational skills, efficiency, aesthetic sensibility, and comfort with customers are all important. We are a well established presence at the markets, we’ve been vending at some of them for over 12 years, and our veggies, wood fired breads and prepared foods are loved in our communities. Feeding our neighbors is what it’s all about!

BARISTAS & SHOPKEEPERS- feed the folks who find the farm: Our café/farm store is a community hub for our customers and crew. We offer up our organic veggies, breads, baked goods, vegetarian specialties and espresso drinks. The space doubles as a gallery for art produced on the farm.

SAWYERS & TIMBERFRAMERS - chop ‘em down and build it up: We sustainably harvest timber from our 175 acres of woodland and mill it on our band sawmill. We also fabricate timber frame assemblies for our own use and to sell locally. We employ traditional mortise and tenon joinery as well as modern elements including home made steel bracketry.

CONSTRUCTION CREW - put it together and keep it running: We’ve been here at Earth Sky Time for 14 years, and not one of them has gone by without a major construction project. We’ve got barns to repair, cabins and greenhouses to build and a fleet of machinery to. maintain. Fun!

We always take time to explain the philosophical and/or practical concepts behind what we are doing. We believe that sharing knowledge with the folks who come work with us is one of our most important roles. Working at Earth Sky Time serves as a broad education in sustainable agriculture and communal country living.

Earth Sky Time is a dynamic farm business, bustling with projects, friends, music, good food, and our four children. We are production oriented but we value wholesome fun. No smoking or excessive partying please. Our kitchen is vegetarian and vegan diets are no problem. We cook, eat (and wash dishes) communally. Accommodations are in our big old farmhouse, cabins, a converted bus and a tree house.

It's an exciting time to be a part of the local organic food movement. Let's work together to feed our neighbors and ourselves.
